Art in Munich: the three Pinakotheken 


If you like art, Munich has a lot to offer. The three Pinakotheken (art galleries), conveniently located very close to one another, are a must-see for anyone living or visiting Munich. Whatever your art-preference (modern, classic or somewhere in between ) you will find it one of the three Pinakotheken: the Alte Pinakothek, the Neue Pinakothek and the Pinakothek der moderne.


Alte Pinakothek Munich

The Alte Pinakothek is the largest with an extensive collection of Old Master paintings from the 14th to the 18th century. Here you will find the work of Dürer, Raphael, Rembrandt, El Greco, Murillo and Rubens.

Monday closed, Tuesday and Wednesday 10.00 a.m. - 8.30 p.m.
Thursday-Sunday 10.00 a.m. - 6.00 p.m.

Admission is free for children under the age of 18


Neue Pinakothek Munich

Opposite the Alte Pinakothek is the Neue Pinakothek. The museum focuses on art from 1800 to the early 20th century. Although sculptures are also on display, the focus is on German painting from the 19th century. Due to extensive renovations the Neu Pinakothek is currently closed. A selection of masterpieces of 19th-century art is on show on the GROUNDFLOOR OF THE ALTE PINAKOTHEK (EAST WING).

Pinakothek der moderne Kunst Munich

The Pinakothek der Moderne has an interesting collection of modern art: sculptures, installations, paintings and applied art.
