Our Expat in the City today: Joana
Who are you and where are you from? Since when are you in Munich? What do you do?
My name is Joana Leal. I was born and grew up in Rio de Janeiro. After finishing my graphic design studies, I came to Munich for the first time in 2002 for an Internship and felt literally in love with the city and with my future husband.
In what way did Expat in the City connect and inspire you?
When Elisabeth told me about Expat in the City I just thought that is a really wonderful idea to connect expats in Munich. She asked me to design the new Expat in The City website, which was great. I think Expat in the City has a great potential to became a useful tool and inspiration source for foreigners in Munich.
What would your advice be to expats in Munich?
I think the best to do is to keep your mind open for new experiences and meeting new people. A lot of people search for this kind of “home feeling” abroad, which I think is never working somewhere else but in your real home. The best way to make a new place feels like home is to open up yourself and feel comfortable - all the rest will come naturally with time.
Munich for me is a very cozy family friendly city. A lot of beautiful green spots, small distances, clean and safe
What does best define Munich for you?
Munich is for me a very cozy family friendly city. A lot of beautiful green spots, small distances, clean and safe. And mostly very good cultural offers. A little paradise (-:
Places or things you love in the City
I really enjoy doing things around our neighborhood, like the Giesinger Bräu and the tasty Der Dantler. Also the street market at Maria Hilf Platz on Saturdays is a very nice weekend starter. And the drinks at Bar Gabanyi are amazing!
Thank you for your time, Joana!
